Note from Jason "JBone" Brumbalow:
We talked to cardsharps, magicians, workers and card artists to make sure everyone had a stake in the design. Everyone contributed to the design and handling in one way or another.
Every time I got on the phone with Brad or a card pro... this deck would evolve that much more. Every time I'd be up cranking photoshop, watching the Big Lebowski while playing Zeppelin's "In Through the Out Door" at 3am ... it would hit me, a new idea... and yet the cycle continued. Ever changing, ever more exciting as I wondered what was going to be next - and frankly - ever fun as hell.
For example, you may notice a small "dot pattern" in the printing of the ShadowMasters deck. You may notice this same dot pattern on many other custom decks out there. With the Arcane deck, we tightened that dot pattern to 2x it's original density to where there is almost no visible dot pattern (unless you look at your cards through a jewelers loop constantly). This allows for more smooth flowing smoke effects, better gradients and transitions, ultimately creating a level of depth and layering that requires precise manipulation of the inks while on press. All while using traditional mass print hardware. Think of it as trying to create a photograph quality print on a machine that spits out 20 sheets a second. It requires a team effort of brains, skill and tenacious resolve for perfection.
Many of the USPC pressmen asked, "How did you make them look 3D like that? It almost looks like an illusion". My reply was usually, "That's why they took so long." But the countless hours of work were all worth it.
Why bother with another deck? Passion. Love. And the foresight to try something no-one has ever tried. I have sunk my ever-loving heart and soul into this deck for almost 5 years. Never have I seen comparable detail, elegance, concept, and execution in a deck of cards. To literally see your "dream-concept" manifest before you is an incredible feeling.
So, we brought all of this together and said...."Yes, there is a tower of new copycat decks flooding the market, but we don't care. We started it. We're the top dogs at it. And we have to see Arcanes in print at any cost."
With that we moved forward. And I have them in print. And they are more perfect than what I had originally dreamed. Things are ALWAYS more fantastic in the imagination. Honestly, my feeble brain did not have this put together at time of concept. This has grown and evolved into something unique and utterly elegant far beyond what I thought they might have looked like at the time I woke up and started sketching that night.
It probably doesn't make sense to invest in another deck of cards for the magic market, but after seeing the concept realized, these just MUST be shared with the world. This deck is not out there to compete or be compared against other decks. It will dance its own dance and sing its own song.
USPC has said that these are the most beautiful decks to hit their presses. That's the reality.
Like that experience, these cards just have to be shared, no better reason than that. I pray you have as much passion performing with them as we had creating them.
